Hi Reghakr,

I had saved this reply you posted in a recent discusson. I cannot relocate the discussion. Does this work for AOL users? That's really all I'd like to know.

I don't believe I'd have saved this info. otherwise. I also doubt that anyone but AOL ppl. would need to go this far, in order to use the program for email! I can't recall, if that was the case with the poster. /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif I thought you may recall?

Thanks!

Click Start>Run and type in this line exactly, including the quotation marks:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

That will reset the registry entries and you can then assign OE as the default mail client.

You'll also need to open Windows Explorer, go to View>FolderOptions, click the FileTypes tab, scroll to URL:MailTo protocol, click the Edit button, click the Edit button again and paste this line into the "Application used to perform action" box:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /mailurl:%1

Or, open Notepad and copy and paste the following between the lines and save the file as oe.reg. Double-click on the file to merge the contents into the registry.
===========BEGIN CUT==============
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\mailto]
@="URL:MailTo Protocol"
"EditFlags"=hex:02,00,00,00
"URL Protocol"=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\mailto\Default Icon]
@="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\\MSIMN.EXE,-2"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\mailto\shell]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\mailto\shell\o pen]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\mailto\shell\o pen\command]
@="\"C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\\MSIMN.EXE\" /mailurl:%1"
==============END CUT============

Mocha,

Truthfully, I know nothing about AOL. Why not just open IE, go to Tools>Internet Options, click the Programs tab and see if Outlook Express is listed in the drop-down e-mail box.

If not, you know how to check settings in the registry and export it before giving it a try.

Reghakr,

AOL users supposedly cannot use Outlook Express for email. There is nothing in the drop down box. I don't necessarily want to use it myself. In fact, we have no choice, but to use AOL email only!!

I was positive that you had given this reply to someone using AOL, so I've been trying to locate the thread. I might be mistaken that this was the case. I just saw no other reason, why I'd save this info.

Yeah, I know......AOL is a mystery and a pain. I know there are other regulars on this forum that use AOL. The thing is, why should anyone other than ppl. using AOL have to edit the registry in order to use OE as an email program?! /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif

Thank you for your response. I just thought you might recall or know, if this was in reply to an AOL person.

Have a good one! /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

Sorry, not much help.

My response was not in reply to anyone using AOL, in fact, I usually refuse to answer questions regarding AOL. I answered yours as a favor, since you are an Enthusiast.

I guess the answer to that is because it's Windoze, associations get messed up. It's simply just a problem that occurs from time to time.

I hope a AOL regular has a solution for you.

reghakr.

I appreciate that, but I'd never expect any of you to resolve AOL issues. I mainly wanted to know, if you did post that in reply to ....

I don't need to know, if I can make it work. If someone happens to know, that's fine. You gave me the answer to my question, so you were a help.

Thanks a lot for the favor
Carol

Mocha,
You can set up a HOTMAIL account and you can also use other POP mail too. It's a matter of setting up the account correctly. I have Compuserve and have both Hotmail and another internet account which uses the OE Folders.
Go to Tools>accounts>Add>Mail
A Wizard will guide you through the addition of your account to OE.
Be sure to set up a Hotmail Account first.

Mosaic,

Yeah, I know I can set up another email account. All I need to do is go directly to Hotmail.

I don't have OE installed, because I didn't think I could use it for my emails with AOL. I thought if there were a way to bypass AOL's nonsense, I might give it a try. /images/forums/icons/tongue.gif

Thanks

Mocha,
Yes. You can use Hotmail. But you can also import your Hotmail account and use it within OE. You an do that for Internet Mail . I believe you can also set up your AOL account to be used within OE too. Follow the directions and start by importing your Hotmail Account into OE.

This says AOL is not compatible. I use Compuserve and can set up OE with it. (AOL owns CS)
I don't know what nonsense exactly. If AOL is not HTML friendly, you can forward your mails to your Hotmail account and view them there.

I think the mistake many people make is in thinking that they can only use AOL mail and therefore they never try OE. OE is compatible with most email clients. You can set up an account and then use the Wizard to import it into your OE.

Mosaic,

Thanks for all your replies. I've no problem with using strictly AOL for emails. I can do fancy emails, insert pics, and it is very convenient....no problem there. /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif

The thing is, that you can not set up OE in your Internet Options as your email program. I.E. is the default browser, but AOL pretty much takes over I.E, and becomes part of it.

It seems that, under the cicumstances, it would just be an extra pain to try to set up OE. The only thing listed in Internet Options is Hotmail, and I guess I never understood that. I assume because it's MSN.

What got me wondering, is that I've seen several AOL ppl., ask 'how to/or can I', use OE for email, and they're told, "you cannot use OE for email with AOL". Therefore, I didn't install it with I.E. Plus, with AOL, you mainly use the AOL browser, but can open I.E. and use whenever.

Just FYI, The idea of AOL's browser is that it's very convenient. That's why ppl. do like AOL, inspite of everything. You can use Keywords, and it's quicker to get around the web. In fact, it can be very slow to go through the I.E. browser alone. Plus, who wants two browsers open, but a lot of ppl. have them both open at the same time.

The thing that gets me about AOL, is that most ppl. don't know that you can "NOT use AOL as your default homepage", or you won't be able to go to the Web! They don't tell ppl. that either, basically. I was lucky enough to talk to the right person. Therefore, many ppl. are convinced that they need another ISP besides AOL (BYOA). That's another $20 a month or so!

For example, my first month, I could not get to the Internet, period. Since AOL uses a proxy server, you cannot go to secure websites, if you leave it as your default homepage.

I could not check my Hotmail acct., go to my Bank account info., phone bill., or basically anywhere on the web, is what it comes down to. This doesn't sound good, does it? Does Compuserve work that way?

I guess this is about enough on this subject. /images/forums/icons/laugh.gifI've always been a bit cursious about how Compuserve works, but sure didn't know that AOL owned it.
