I prefer Wordpad to Notepad because it has many more options but one thing neither has is saving files in htm format. At least Notepad has a "*.*" option, lacking in Wordpad.

When I view a webpage's source in Wordpad, I can't save it in any other format but Word, RTF or text. Is there some way to add either "htm" or "*.*" formats to Wordpad's save options?

Thanks

Unfortunately not. The file types are built in to the wordpad program itself. You can save it like this (with quotes)

"webpage.htm"

but it still won't view correctly when using Internet Explorer. However, If you use wordpad to open the file then it will display the source code correctly.

I had a bad feeling about that :(

I suppose Notepad is the same? The default in Notepad is "Text documents".

Many people write their pages in Notepad. Save as whatever.html or whatever.htm A htm is a text document you don't have to use quotes or save as anything special.
Using Wordpad and saving as whatever.htm or whatever.html and in the drop down choosing to save as text wil generate a warning that you will lose all formatting. You want that. The file will view in IE

one way around this is to save the file as a .txt file then open the explore (right click the start button) navagate to the whatever.txt and rename it to whatever.html you will get a warning about changing ext disregard and click ok.....

I have had to do a few times when I reach the limit of notepad......

When I write a html page I usual end up with a few files cause I'll leave one file as txt and just save a second file of the text and rename it to the html file

this way the txt file will open wordpad or notepad and the other one that is copy of the txt as html will open the explorer to test it...

if you want to always have wordpad open a txt just add a command to the files types and make it default but leave the txt assoc. that open notepad their....

a good example to look at is the .reg file types you will see there is more than one entry

normaly when you click on .reg it merge the file if you right click it it gives you the option of merge or edit... by using notepad

you don't have to go through any of that. Just save it, A html file is a text file. Save it as whatever.html
In Wordpad choose textfile in the drop down menu. In Notepad, it will already have that selected for you.

Thanks for all the replies. I do a lot of online html editing and keep copies on my hard disk (in case the server goes down or the files are deleted). For this reason, it would be better if either Notepad or Wordpad could be tweaked to not only accept html format but to set it as the default. As it is, Notepad defaults to a .txt file and usually in my \temp directory so that I have to first change it to *.* files, then browse the directory where I want to save it (or overwrite an existing html file). That was the reason for the enquiry.

I guess I'll just have to persevere or use CutePage or similar shareware to save the work with.

That was only a few options and ideas since then I have figured out you can use mircosoft office to write web page it does all the hard work you just have to plop and go.... using microsoft office it does all the background coding and you can also edit the scipt and HTML by opening a behind the scene windows....

if you save two copies one copy is the txt file and the other file is the html file open the txt file edit save it as txt then save it as html...... upload the html file. so when you click on the txt file notepad or word pad will open and if you click on the html file explorer will open.... just remeber always edit the txt file then save it as html.... Don't need a third party product

even using microsoft office it saves it as a html file and it will open explorer first when you click on it.... you have to open word then open the html file to edit it....

I was say if you add a line to the file types then you could right click on the text file and word pad would open the txt file....

If you choose you can add the line and set the default as word pad and a right click would then get you notepad

at the top after you press new name it

Open with Wordpad

use this in the box that says application to use

"C:\Program Files\Accessories\Wordpad.exe"

when you close that out you will see where open is bold that is set as defualt

select the open with wordpad that you made and depress set as defualt it will now be bold and .txt file will open with wordpad

if you right click on the text file you will see the open in the context window that is notepad it is still there just not the defualt one

Thanks

Why sticking to windows original notepad or wordpad? With a search in your search engine you can find a lot of free text editors with more capibility and simplity than wordpad. I personally prefere pfe101i (programmers file editor). Give it a try and test it's capability.

It's very versatile.
