I own a refurb laptop operating Win 95, and I believe I have a defective Sound device. The device is a Plug and Play ESS Audio Drive, and it has not worked correctly for quite a while. I want to remove it from my system, but good ole Windows detects it automatically every time I start up. Is there any editing I can do in the Registry or BIOS to stop Windows from searching for the device?

CMOS (bios) usually dosen't give you options for sound. Is the sound card built in on the board?
If so, you can disable jumper settings so it will no longer be recognized by windows. If it's a sound card seated in an expansion slot. Remove it. Or, go to system properties and check "Disable in this hardware profile". Then install a new sound card (basic one costs about $20.00) and then remove your old one. I take it win95 dosen't have the updated drives needed. Go to ESS web site and look for drivers there. It's a real problem (as you can see) when you inherit a pc. Should be a law that any used pc sales include all necessary drivers for your hardware. Kind of like a smog check in a pre car sale.

Hope this helps

by any chance is this a Compaq Ferb? If it is go to HTTP://WWW.COMPAQ.COM/ATHOME/SUPPORT/SOFTPAQ/SP_DESK.HTML

They have little fixes for things like that. If not just boot the machine into safemode and disable it in the Device Manager and it will stop detecting.
