Does anybody know how to get rid of the "Network Login Password" box that loads when I start my computer? I have tried everything I can think of or read about, including deleting the .pwl files, editing the network configurations in the Control panel. I'm running Windows ME.

Thanks in advance.

Primary Network Login > Windows Logon

Password Properties

Check > All users of this PC use the same preferences and desktop settings.

Remove Passwords:
Go to C:\Windows
Delete all .pwl files

Go to Run > Sysedit
Open system.ini
Delete all lines under
[Password Lists]
Close and Save changes

I am also having trouble trying to load windows without the annoying user dialog box. I have tried the options listed in the above post, as well as some others: I have deleted all my .pwl within windows, I have have removed all passwords from the sysedit/system.ini file, have deleted all user accounts from the control panel applet "users", in network properties I have switched the primary network logon from "Microsoft Networks" to "Windows logon" and viceversa many times, and I have also tried the following registry entry from another post "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr ent version\network\real mode net\
Right-click on Real Mode Net, choose new>Binary value, name it AutoLogon
and give it a value of 01 00 00 00. reghakr".

In the past this has always been a very simple procedure, this time I am having no such luck. Everytime I see this "user dialog box", despite my efforts to disable this annoying thing, I have become all the more frusterated to the point where I'm spinning off tangents to find a solution.

I'm venting here a little, but if anybody has any ideas, please post.

have either one of used a tweak program

some of them change this setting

Does win me have a network properties panel in the control panel

if it does change this setting under the access control tab toooooooo share-level access control

from a microsoft site page

MORE INFORMATION
Microsoft Windows provides two types of security protection for file and printer sharing. You can select the type of security protection on on the Access Control tab in the Network tool in Control Panel.

The first type of security protection is share-level access control. When you use this method, the type of access to grant is controlled by which of two passwords is used to request access. One password specifies read-only access, and the other specifies full access.

The second type of security protection is user-level access control. This method allows you to specify what type of access to grant to specific users. User-level access control does not require the use of passwords to decide what access type to grant.

Because it is the password verification feature that is vulnerable, only share-level access control is affected. To avoid this issue, computers that are part of a Windows-based domain should be set to use user-level access control.

Thanks

Have you tried removing Client for MS Networks? That's one way to take care of it once and for all, in my opinion. That's assuming you're not networked.

I use AOL and am set up with MS VPN support rather than Client, in order to be able to get to the Internet. In fact, I can't connect without it, but no password boxes.

FYI I recently had to add the Client temporarily, when I did the Wsock2 update. Some reason it wouldn't work otherwise; said MS TCP/IP was not installed?! (I had all the adapters installed, so...)

I was just taking a shot in the dark, as far as adding that back, in order to get this taken care of. It worked! Then the Wsock2 update was successful....so I went back and removed the Client for MS again.:)

Coolsights,

WinMe does a network properties panel in control panel, however I do not use user level security and is share-level by default.

Mocha,

I have tried removing client for Microsoft as well as the client/protocols for my NIC and completely empting my network properties panel and re-installing the drivers.

Let me give more information regarding my configuration. We have 4 pc's sharing a D-link wirless router, and all 4 are running Windows ME (I can hear it already...hehe) Very little and almost never is anything shared among the network. I have at one time installed the home networking wizard on a couple of the pc's, but this function is never used, and are virtualy stand-alone pc's.

I would really like to try figure this thing out with out using any tweaks, I really hate losing to a computer!...hehe

Coolsights, Mocha I really appreciate your input if there's anything else you can think of please post.

Thanks,
Vector

It's not really a network, except that we use a router to share our internet connection.

Thanks

That means you are 'Networked!' That sheds a whole different light on the subject.

You should have mentioned that right off!! I know nothing about networking either. I wouldn't have wasted my time typing up all that info. for you, had I known. /images/forums/icons/mad.gif

Thanks a lot for your help!

Any time you connect 2 or more computers together, whether with cable or wireless, they are networked.

As long you are not logging in to a domain and it is not a multi-user environment, this should work:

First, go to Control Panel>Users and delete any users you've created.

Try #3 first, it may do the trick alone, if not go through the following steps.

1. Go to Start>Search>Search for Files & Folders... type in *.pwl and delete all .pwl files in c:\windows

2. Go to Start>Run, type notepad system.ini. Maximize the system.ini
Delete all lines under
[Password Lists]

3. Go to ControlPanel>Network
Choose Windows Logon as Primary Login

Reboot

You should now get the login box one last time. Just click OK for no password.
