What's up guys.
Here's my problem: 933mhz/320ram/Win ME/56k modem.
for the last 2 weeks my IE performance has been unbearable--i've done at least 5 reg tweaks to enhance IE performance (which worked up to 2 weeks ago)--i've scanned for viruses--i've done the reg/fix-reg/opt but all to no avail !!
my modem is set to connect at 115000 bps max connection speed (it still connects at 48000-i don't know if that's good or bad )-all this have seemed to occur after i down loaded Morpheus--but i'm not certain of this --What the H... could my problem be !!!

did you get a virus or pick up some spyware

All I see on the net is how people are getting viruses when they download this program!!!

here is one page
Click here (http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/67/lev3/70/pid/616/qid/143176)

what virus signature are you using they changed weekly and daily..

48k sounds about right for a modem it can't go any faster no matter what tweaks you use
can you tweak the phone cord or the phone line to the phone company NO!!

under ideal conditions up might get 53K

Thanks
Mac!!!

This Is just my opinion
So if it stinks wait for another one
Cause I'm no expert

Perhaps people are sharing your files using up your connection.

I have had the same problem:
1. get rid of Morpheus, use BearShare or Audiogalaxy
2. clean and defrag your system frequently, there are tons of cleaning programs as freeware available. Esp. the IE logfile is a problem on my machine, when it is getting bigger and bigger. Deleting unneccessary file increases the performance of my system (incl. IE) dramatically (WIN 98 SE)

Morpheus is essentially a file sharing application that uses the peer-to-peer protocol to allow you to search for any type of media (mp3's, videos, documents, applications, etc...) across the MusicCity network. The network itself consists of millions of people using the Morpheus application. There are no servers as the peer-to-peer protocol eliminates the need allowing all computers to communicate and share resources as peers.

Not quite spyware, but just as bad because it gives others access to your computer, like you were on a LAN. Anything that lets someone see what's on another computer is not good in todays hacker, virus and security conscious community.

48k is good - I get 49333, a buddy gets 51. Sometimes I use a different ISP, and get 39k.
Another buddy could only get 28.8 on his 56k V.90, no matter where he called. Phone lines in his house were 1940s vintage (run poorly, bad impedance), poor grounding caused noise in the data stream.
I once had a telephone which would knock a 14.4 down to 9600 whenever I had that phone connected anywhere on the same line, even when it was hung up! I'd plug in that phone and would watch the modems renegotiate a new speed!
Anyway, I'd say your connection speeds fit right in.

As for reg tweaks, hmm. MaxMTU? BlackHole detect? Searching the net for those terms might help.

If all else fails, try Process Viewer for Windows. I'm still trying this program out, and I see it is a bit over my head, right now. Use it with great caution and realize that you should take responsibility for the consequences, if any arise. Get it at http://www.prcview.com and see what is really running on your PC!!

Finally, have you tried good old "control-alt-delete" to see what is running when IE is so slow? Maybe you have also added something else to the list of running tasks. I once had a similar slowdown, I found that I had BRAD32.EXE running; this was after my IS people installed McAffee antivirus. A quick check on the internet (love that Google!) showed lots of people suffer when BRAD32.EXE is running, and that many IT people didn't like it for the performance hits it caused. I found that it was hogging CPU. MSCONFIG took care of the BRAD32.EXE, and I got back up to speed.
