Hello, it's great to join the forum. Every time I install windows 98, the registry checker pops up, claims to restore the registry after a restart, then restarts with an explorer.exe error. It totally crashes the registry, leaving windows completely disfunctional. I am installing on a clean Western Digital drive, after a full format. The machine has an Asus motherboard, Celeron 900, 256 meg ram, cdrom, etc. During an install errors such as user.dll and rundll pop up. Any ideas? Thanks.

Can you provide any of the error messages? They may provide a place to start.

During the 98 install, occasionally there will be a rundll or userdll error message. I can still succesfully complete the install. All of the problems mainly start as soon as I install 98 second edition upgrade, which comes up with the registry checker prompt, claims to restart and fix the registry problem, and reboots with an explorer.exe error message, and a blank windows desktop.

try installing with a different stick of RAM. Bad RAM will do incredibly weird stuff. I had a computer that'd install just fine, but would lock up on startup every time

Thanks for the advise Jebus, I will try a new stick of ram, this problem has to be some sort of hardware I\O conflict. If this doesn't work, I may remove all PCI cards, and progress from there.
