View Full Version : opening a new window...

I would like to know how to force Internet Explorer to open a new(second) browser window when I open a bookmark from Favorites in the Start menu. For example, I have IE open and am viewing a webpage, when I go into Strart - Favorites, and choose a bookmark, it uses the current browser that is already open, making whatever I was viewing go away, which is very irritating. I am using IE6 and win98 4.10.2222

I'm still trying to figure out the tweak so when you click directly on the favorite it will open in a new window.
Here's a variation for now...
Go to My Computer then the c:\ drive.
Right click in a blank space and select New/text document.
Rename the New Text Document.txt file to IE.bat
right click on ie.bat and select edit
paste this into the file..
RUNDLL32.EXE url.dll,FileProtocolHandler %1
close the file.
create a shortcut to the ie.bat file.
cut the shortcut and paste it into the Windows\SendTo folder.
Right click on the new shortcut (in the windows\sendto folder) and select properties. Go to the program tab and select close on exit and minimize on run.
Now when you go to Start/Favorites right click on a favorite and "send it" to the SendTo/IE.bat option.

This advice is free.
You might only get what you paid for. /images/forums/icons/wink.gif

billydee,
Thanks. You saved me some typing. I am always grateful for that. LOL

Patrick,
I tried to make Link Opens in New Window the default. I used the standard method. It won't do it. It seems to be one of those things which won't work no matter what you do.
I use the context menu tweak I invented but can't get it to default. But it's still convenient. I use it all the time.
Here's another trick, too. I have IE 6. I don't know if this works in other versions of IE. First you have to uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" Same as for the other Tweak.
If you use the links toolbar, here's something.
Make sub folders in the links folder. Add any frequently used shortcuts. When you launch a shortcut from inside a sub folder in the links toolbar, it will open in a new window. However, it will not launch in a separate window if you click on that same shortcut from the favorites menu inside the subfolder of the links folder. You have to launch it from the Links toolbar.
I have made my own specialized Links Menu using several subfolders and making the icon invisible for not only the subfolders, but for the links folder itself. I no longer have the ugly Links toolbar look. It is totally clean, no icons at all. And each folder opens in a drop down menu. I suppose if you wanted, you could copy all the favorites into the links menu subfolders and when adding a new fav, just add it into one of those. I have no idea whether or not there's a size limit involved in using the links folder. But it could be organized to hold all favorites.
I haven't done that. But it would work too.

Thanks billydee!! I thought there was a posting about it recently. I just couldn't remember exactly where.

Hi Mo,
Thanks for this posting. Seriously, these are great tweaks!!!
I can see that you went from imagination to reality. <<<all great inventor's go through this :).
I can state that from now on when I read IE postings, I'll certainly go through your own previous postings before I answer.
Thanks again.

I just ran into a variation on this tweak on a German site:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\Öffnen in neuem Fenster\command]
@="rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"AllowWindowReuse"=dword:00000000
I looked a bit further, but that was all I could find remotely resembling Mo's tweak.
So it is a true original.

Patrick,
Thank you. I stumble around and eventually get lucky with these things sometimes.
Tony,
That was my first original. In the Fall of 2000. Did you doubt it? At another Forum someone else was working on it. He asked for help. He introduced me to Regmon. I got lucky and solved the question of how to accomplish it.

In that case I obviously need to do a lot more stumbling around myself... LOL

And about Regmon, I do have it, but need to learn how to use it more effectively.
You need to filter out a lot of stuff or you get buried alive...
I've had some limited success using InCtrl5 for this as well, using Notepad.exe as 'install program', and having it monitor registry changes.
Any tips about using Regmon?

Filter. You hit it on the head. Then use Filemon too. And other than that, be prepared to spend a lot of time getting the hang of the patterns. The registry is important. But trying to understand how Windows and other programs access the registry and what information they are looking for, how it ties in with files. Interface. That's key.
When you do, let me know. LOL
It's a puzzle.
Mo
That sounded flip. Sorry. The truth is that's the truth. I've spent a lot of time performing actions and watching what regmon says is being accessed. Sometimes you can trace a problem. Especially when there is a missing entry. I remove keys and look at the result. Sometimes I just go into the registry and look. There is more to it than just looking. I get on the internet and ask questions on Google. I play. Sometimes I answer questions on Forums by going in and digging around.
Mostly, I stumble around and once in a while I get one of those AHA moments when things come together in my mind.
Here's a nice Link to help you out: ( I wish I had found this one a lot sooner.)

Thanks for the link, Mo. Very useful!
And Filemon's installed as well. :)
I know what you mean, about 'stumbling around', though.
I often discover things the same way, by 'happening on' things, and by putting two and two together.
I just need to spend a little more time experimenting, and a little less hanging out on 8 different boards... LOL
