I know that My Computer doesnt have a phisical place on the hard dirve, but how can I define it's path. Lets say I want to manualy create a short cut that points to My computer, what will I write in the Target field? Or If I want MS Word to show My computer by default in the Open or Save dialog box, what will be the registry tweak for that?

That is a philosophical question destined to rank right up there with "Can someone have too much fun?" or "Why does a tornado always touch down in at least one trailer park?"

But I can get the ball rolling on an answer, "My Computer" is your computer.

That said, the one "name" that is "My Computer" is the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) \\YourComputerName which in the world of the internet translates to an IP address and is at the very least a something that is nothing without something added to it. Sort of like wind, you can feel it and it can affect you but you can't see it.

It can also be said that "My Computer" is the logical root of the computer system and is the equivalent of a required prefix to specify a specific place in that system.

You can't refer to My Computer without having some additional appended information. It just doesn't compute.

The two rules for success:
1. Never tell them everything you know.

The way it sounds to me, is that YOU'RE philosophical...not the question. I think the guy knows what 'my computer' is! You didn't even begin to answer his question with all your lovely, big words../images/forums/icons/laugh.gif

To Rjkrash:
euh... I dont think that I asked the "Path to spiritual nirvana" and stuff. I allready know all that. ;-)
You sound like some kind of kung-fu zen master or something.

To Coolsights2000:
Ok, the shortcut thing was just an exemple. Hehe... Rightclicking on "My computer" is the first thing I would have tried in that case.
But what about having "My computer" content as default in Open and Save dialogs? Did you notice that in a shortcut to "My computer", the target field is disabled. So we cant realy find out what it realy points to. (Damn!)

It can't have a path because it isn't a path. You can create a shortcut like coolsights2000 says but you cannot type in a location to My Computer in a new shortcut . In Word you are required to input a directory path for the default Open or Save location. My Computer is not a directory or a path by itself. The closest you can come is to define a path to your desktop which is a directory under your %systemdrive%\documents and settings\username on WinXP.

I hope you took no offense at my "rant" post. I'm sure you asked your question in good faith, I just found the question to be amusing in an interesting kinda way. It fired a philosophical neron in my brain that just had to be satiated. /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

One last thing the class id for "My Computer" in WINXP is {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

If you are easy with CLASSES and CLSID things, maybe you'll find what you're looking for with this CLSID :
20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D

It seems to be the one which define the MyComp thing.

It may help,

...or not.

PS : what is the n°2 rule ???

It is a 'think about it' statement.

He is following Rule number 1 and not telling.

It's beyond me how anyone could place Rehades question in this category! Have you ever thought of coming down to earth? It really isn't all that bad here! /images/forums/icons/tongue.gif

"I just found the question to be amusing in an interesting kinda way. It fired a philosophical neron in my brain that just had to be satiated".

/images/forums/icons/crazy.gif Yeh, right.....the QUESTION was very amusing indeed. I think you got lost on the way to a different type of forum!

Sorry about that. The person asked a legitimate question about something in a post in the thread and I thought an answer was deserved. We in the U.S. use those types of idioms and persons of another culture may not always understand.

Like I said above this is a cool find and this works for a shortcut, but it still isn't a path. Word won't take anything like this as a default file path.

Sorry about the thread.
I just get it while going home.

By the way, I have to spent less time with computers and re-watch the whole Monthy Python's Flying Circus.

Ok, for all of you who likes to talk to much!

Answer to your question: The CLASS is your path for My Computer

My Computer

1.) Create a "New Folder"
2.) Change the name for the folder and enter following information: My PC.{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
3.) Done !

FYI

Control Panel

1.) Create a "New Folder"
2.) Change the name for the folder and enter following information: Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

Printers Folder

1.) Create a "New Folder"
2.) Change the name for the folder and enter following information: Printer Folder.{ your you to find out, will make it nice practice }

And I think the 2nd rule is the same as the first one!

Thank You!
