View Full Version : Changing drive letters
How can I change the drive letters in Win ME? I checked out Bill's site, but , surprisingly, it didn't help?!? I have a 6 gig & a 30 gig drive. The 30 is the fastest, & has 3 partitions, 1 for the operating system, & one for the swap files, & one with the rest. When I start up windows me, it assigns my operating system to drive C then my 6 gig gets the letter d. I want to put the 6 gig drive as the last letter... Can anyone offer any help?
I also want to change the default install directory from 'c:program Files' to another.
Thanks.
Paul

Thanks, elf, but I really want to understand how to do it.

I don't know if this will explain it, but the BIOS reports any drives in the system to the boot up process. With Win9x and DOS, the first hard drive is C, the second drive is D. If there are any logical/extended partitions on any drive, they are reported next, e.g. 2nd partition on first drive would be E, 3rd partition on first drive would be F, 4th partition on first drive would be G, 2nd partition on second drive would be H, 3rd partition on second drive would be I, etc.. Then would come either a Zip drive or CD-ROM drive. It gets real difficult to re-assign drive letters to hard drive/partitions in Win9x. Since WinME doesn't have much DOS left in it, I am not sure if it does it any different. And this is just with IDE-type drives. SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) systems allow 6 devices on a cable (7 total connections) and usually 2 cables.
And the more the partitions, the more difficult to manage.
I looked at the link in the previous answer and it is a piece of software you install that allows you to customize your drive lettering. (Lose that program and you may not have access to your drives.)

Most likely will not happen win9x/ME systems.
It's very easy to change drive letters using NT/2000/XP. But you can't change the System drive letter.
Truthfully I dould advise against moving the C:\Program Files directory. Too many programs rely on it in it's default location.

'I also want to change the default install directory from 'c:program Files' to another. '
The default you are referring to is set by the program being installed. You can browse to install anywhere you like but any upgrades or addins will have to be installed where the original was installed causing you to have to locate the program first.
