"someone" has stretched out the start menue till it covers the desktop when I hit start.....how do you get the thing back to the narrow size it was? I can't seem to drag the edges of it at all.......This seems like a really stupid problem but not knowing the answer is driving me nuts! Thanks

katy,

I'm not sure, but is there a very long filename located above the Start Button.

Or maybe you'd like the Start Menu scroll feature:
Open regedit and navigate to:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\explorer\Advanced

Look for the StartMenuScrollPrograms entry and give it a value of true.

I think you are misunderstanding me.....it is spread out just like you can drag one side of a window and make it wider? Looks like this is what happened to the start menue. the whole thing is on the desktop I don't need to scroll through it but now it is about as wide as 3/4 of the screen! There must be some way to get it back to the narrow way it was before.

Hi Katy,

Is this what you're talking about?

Right-click the Taskbar and select Properties from the popup menu.
Go to Taskbar Options/check 'show small icons in Start Menu'?

no, when I push the start button....the first gray block that comes up(the one with the menue in it) is about as "wide" as half the screen.....used to be narrow and up the side of the screen......can't figure for the life of me how to get it back.....I am set on the small icons, that isnt what is wrong

I have no idea.

Can you restore a prior registry through the scanreg /restore command in MS-DOS?

If this happened less than a day or five ago, this will probably resolve this.

Forgot to ask: anything specially installed or uninstalled just before this started hapening?

Katy,
I think one of the suggestions Reghakr made is something to look at. If one of the names on the menu is long, the menu is widened to accomodate that name. Do you have anything with a very long name? If so, rename it and the menu will shrink back.

katy,

When you click Start...is that where the problem occurs?

or is it when you select Start>Programs?

When you click Start>Programs do you see one column with an arrow at the bottom which allows you to access the programs below it?

Or do you see two or three columns with all your programs listed?

i don't think it could be a long name... normally windows cuts off the name adds three dots, so the start menu shouldn't cover more than 1/4 of the screen (i'm referring to a name four times the
length of a - z)

i can think of two things, which i've encountered before.

first, there may be so many shortcuts on the start menu (not inside "programs", right above it) that it cascades, which can only be the case if cascading is enabled. yet, it doesn't sound like this is the problem.

more likely the display resolution could have been changed very low by some or other means, which would cause the start menu to appear massive.

still, i'm not sure if any of these is the right solution...

good luck & regards
