Hello - this is probably one of the most common questions.. but I couldn't find any answers to this in the first couple of forum pages.
Can anyone give me a step by step process of restoring an earlier version of my registry. Today I installed a program I shouldn't of.. and now some other progs of mine are stuffed. I need the registry I had this morning..please help. BTW.. I had Windows 98SE on a dell laptop.

First you absolutely need to uninstall the program through the Add-remove Software applet in Control Panel.
Now reboot into real MS-DOS (Start/Shutdows/Restart in MS-DOS)
- At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command, and then press ENTER.
- At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore, and then press ENTER.
- Select the previous registry you want to restore, and then press ENTER.
NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date.
- When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer.
Good luck, Tony

If you are using a logon screen (password) with profiles using restore functions does you no good....
You have to back up the profiles up by hand!!!
The only thing the scanreg back up does is save the c:\windows stuff
So forget using registry restore it is a joke!!!
Thanks
Mac!!!
This Is just my opinion
So if it stinks wait for another one

I have to argue a bit.
When stuffed...scanreg /restore is a saver.

SYMPTOMS
When you configure Windows to use user profiles and run the Windows Registry Checker tool (Scanreg.exe) to back up the computer registry, the User.dat files that are associated with each profile are not backed up.
Scanreg.exe Does Not Back Up User.dat Files When Using User Profiles (Q245147)
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because the User.dat file associated with a user's profile is located in the C:\Windows\Profiles\ username folder when you configure Windows to use user profiles. Scanreg.exe backs up the User.dat file from the Windows folder, not each individual C:\Windows\Profiles\ username \User.dat file.
