disabling anti-virus

From what I'm reading it seems that Norton's Anti-Virus is causing my problems with booting up, I can't boot in normal or safe mode, it doesn't freeze but sits there waiting. Is there a way to disable the anti-virus program from dos? I've an earlier post if anyone wants to read it, it's just a few down the list.
