View Full Version : Techie Challenge

Okay, I'm not a techie, I admit it. I'm simply and internet freak who uses
his computer to surf and play. So I don't have much to offer to all you
very literate techies. However, here's a problem that no techie has yet
to figure out. And many have tried.
I'm using Windows Me. Netscape Communicator 4.79. My ISP is Earthlink.
When I click on my desktop shortcut icon to Earthlink, I have to type in my
password every time because the password box and the automatic
connect box are grayed out. I know this isn't a monumental problem, but
it's frustrating and I'm determined to fix it. (Am I living in a Lynch movie
now, like "Mulholland Drive"...egads!). I've tried everything to fix it, from clicking the add
Client for Microsoft boxes, etc, in the Control Panel, not to mention a couple
of other tricks, offered but not useful.
Any help would be appreciated. And now if you'll excuse me I'm humming
"Blue Velvet," and many weird images are crashing through my mind.
"Where's my canister!" ;>)

Re: Can't SAVE PASSWORD ...help [re: tomo]
Good link, if you still need help:
Resetting your passwords almost never fails.
1. Go to C:\Windows
Delete all .pwl files
2. Open system.ini
Delete all lines under
[Password Lists]
3. Go to ControlPanel>Network
Choose Windows Logon as Primary Login
Reboot
You should now get the login box one last time. Type your name and password, or just click OK for no password.
Now right-click on InternetExplorer on the desktop, choose properties, click the Connections tab, highlight your dial-up connection and choose the Settings button. Input your dial-up password here.
Or try this information from Microsoft. In Internet Explorer, choose Help>Online Support, click the Searchable Knowledge Base, choose Specify an artice ID number and enter the following numbers:
Q148925 or Q137361
Dial-Up Networking Password Is Not Saved:

Save Password Check Box Is Unavailable: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q137/3/61.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=Q137361%20&rnk=1&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=IE
If all else fails, try re-creating the Dial-Up Networking connection.

Thanks for the info. I've already tried what you suggested, however, just to be safe I tried all the steps again and it still isn't fixed.
In fact, I even deleted my dial-up network connection and created a new connection and the save password and automatic connection boxes were still grayed-out. This is really mind boggling and a true test of some techies expertise.
I, unfortunately, am in the dark. I've tried everything. I've had a lot of help and I thank you and those who have also tried, but next to totally losing my os and starting again, I'm baffled.
As I said it's not a major deal, just one of those frustrating puzzles one really wants to solve.
Thanks again

Well, believe it or not, I think I've finally fixed it. Thanks for the link. It took me to the 9th step before I fixed it, but the funny thing is that I had gone through that reg step once before, changing from 00 to 01. But then a new problem arose...windows logon prompt at startup. I changed that and now everything looks a.o.k.
But will it be okay tomorrow. There's the rub. Thanks again Guru. I very much appreciate your help. Happy New Year!
