I repartition my hdd to multi-boot with win2k pro, as win98 is, "broken."
So i first left the space unallocated, leaving one 10gb fat32.
After the windows part of the install, it went into dos mode, and said "starting windows 2000" then i got a stop error "INACCESIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

So i went back into windows, make a 9gb NTFS, formatted it as ntfs (screen shot above) and tried install again, same error.

Please help! ;~(

You may have to start over, but the main question is, why does it show the first partition as "hidden NTFS"?

It reads like the partition path's referenced in the boot.ini file do not match your boot sequence.

can you post the contents of the boot.ini file?

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
C:\ = "Previous Operating System on C:"
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT = "Windows 2000 Installation/Upgrade"

got it. based on your screenshot (nice idea, I might add) and the boot.ini file, it reads like 2000 never completed it's install. I see what you did... You tried to setup 2000 on the same partition as 98.

how about..

using a boot disk and boot to dos. go to the c:\ drive and delete.

boot.ini
bootsec.dos
ntldr (if there)
ntdetect.com (if there)

also delete the temporary 2000 install folder

$WIN_NT$.~BT

then from the A:\ prompt type sys c:

this will return the boot record back to dos/98

then insert the 2000 CD and hit control/alt/delete

(this assumes the bios is set to boot from CD)

If it isn't, you'll need a boot disk with cd-rom support (which I have if needed).

when you get the option to select the partition for the install select d: and have it also "re-format" the d: (ntfs) drive.

continue with the install via the prompts.

To tell you the truth. I'd format c: and d: reinstall 98 on c: and then install 2000 on d:

Windows can also have an issue with installation partition sizes and locations. Don't forget that the system partition (containing the boot files / Operating system files - confusing aint it) has to be located in the first 4gb of disk space. In addition can help to create the partition as FAT and convert to NTFS later. If your win98 partition exceeds 4gb then it is possible that the bootloader cannot physically see your operating system files.

My 2 cents worth, I have Win98 and Win2K on a notebook, 20 GB drive, partition half/half, dual-booting no problem at all. Both parts are FAT32, just so I have access to all the storage areas from both systems. Also a notebook with Win98/WinXP same way.
