I can't get my drive repair utility (Norton) or the NT chkdisk process to run. I get this message: "Drive is in use by another process and cannot be repaired. A repair can be scheduled to occur the next time your restart the system."
I ok the restart repair, but when the system restarts, I get the message that the process "can't open the volume for direct access".
I own this system (given to me by my former employer) and have full administrator privileges, or so I thought. (It also won't let me change the time on the system.)
Any advice?

wcisler,
I had the same exact problem, and I too had full admin access to my machine, unfortunately I was never able to solve the problem. (I didn't have the time problem though.) The problem was seriously affecting my performance. I ended up backing my data up and wiping my machine away and reinstalling everything. Sorry I can't offer any other help, I hope someone can.

have u tried booting into safe mode and scan the drive??
another way is to make sure u do not load anything eg. antivirus s/w and any other s/w when your computer restart. then try the disk repair.

How about a reboot. You can usually do the disk scan immediately. In fact, pop the battery and pull the plug so windows does NOT close down normally and you will go into a disk check on reboot.
More generally - HOW can you tell what program has your disk, diskette, or cd open?
