The browser was unable to promote itself to master browser. The computer that currently believes it is the master browser is MYPE-E0114F.
I keep getting this error on most of my Win2k workstation. What actually is a Master browser and how do I solve this problem. MYPE-E0114F is a name of one of the Win2k workstation on the network.

acymlf,
Here is the MS KB referring to the problem. And here is the <a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q102878> article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q143153>) the explains the browser service. Good luck
Mike
Fumbling through the registy since 1998 ;o)
For information of about the Master Browser Process, check out the following link KB Q102878:

This is a common problem, is there a reason why you need the browsing service enabled on your client workstation?
You should only able browsing on your servers to cut down browsing broadcasting & elections.
If you want to disable the browsing service on your clients change the following reg keys using a batch process:
This will disable the browsing service:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Browser]
"Start"=dword:00000002
This will stop the browser elections:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Browser\Parameters]
"IsDomainMaster"="FALSE"
"MaintainServerList"="No"
Hope this helps...

Goto the services tab under comuter management.
What are the properties (Startup & Status) for the Computer Browser Service on PC's reporting the error in the event viewer?
If you want the error to stop gettting logged, change the startup to either manual or disabled.
Also, what exactly are you try to do:
Elimate the errors in the event viewer?
Or ensure a certain PC is the Master Browser?

The status for the Computer Browser is Started and Automatic.
If it is changed to manual or disable does that mean the problem is solved or it has stop reporting the problem only??
How do I eliminate the error then???
BTW is this service critical or can we get along without it??
Thanks.

If you change the computer browser service to manual or disabled, this will stop your pc from trying to become a master browser. This means your pc will no longer attempt to force browser elections & it should stop the errors.
Use the reg hacks I listed below, I made a typo in the one above to roll this onto several pc's at once (you'll have to reboot all pc's modified by the hack for it to take affect)
If you want to disable the browsing service on your clients change the following reg keys using a batch process:
This will disable the browsing service:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Browser]
"Start"=dword:00000004
This will stop the browser elections:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Browser\Parameters]
"IsDomainMaster"="FALSE"
"MaintainServerList"="No"
I don't mean to be rude, but if you start making changes like these without knowing what your doing you will get yourself into alot of problems & headaches.
I'd suggest getting NT/W2K book and doing some research on WINS, DNS, Browser service.
