Explorer not responding

I am running WIN98. When I click on a desktop icon to start an application my PC hangs (application doesn't start). I do Ctrl>Alt>Del and it shows Explorer is not responding. I click end task and I go back to my desktop. No changes have been made to this PC in quite awhile, it just started doing this. Any suggestions?

what other program do u have running in the background?? how much memory and hard disk do u have???
