Hello people,
For some crazy reason, nothing in my control panel wants to work. Clicking on the add/remove icon, nothing happens. I have tried to also use regedit.exe...same problem.
I am using Win 98SE on a Pent. III 450, with 128 megs of memory. I have used this machine for about 2 years, and never had this problem. I have not yet upgraded anything, or added more memory. So my best guess, that this would be the cause. Does anybody have any kind of idea on what I can do to fix this? Any help would be helpful. Thanx... :)
Peace people

Can you start any other programs?

Yea, I can start pretty much any program. It's just anything that is IN the control panel that doesn't work. When I have to uninstall something, I do it with the uninstall thing that comes with the program, or I have to remove the program by deleting all the files myself. If I want to check anything that you access through the control panel, I can't do. The Regedit.exe icon don't work either. I just called my PC company techs, and they couldn't figure it out . Could it be a memory problem? That is what the tech's first guess was. My system resources read at 90% free. I don't know. He also suggested a virus. The antivirus program didn't find anything. I also tried a registry scan in DOS mode, and this also did not find anything wrong. This is very strange.

Copy everything between the lines below into notepad. Save the file as cp.reg
Double click the file to add the entries in.

Ok, I opened notepad, copyied the lines and saved the file as cp.reg. I go to open the file, and it is not recognized as a .txt file. I have to go back into notepad, and open it from there. I'm having this problem with other kinds of files too, like= .bmp, .jpeg, and .gif. Even with some zip files. When I click on what is supposed to be a zip file, I get a message telling me that winzip is not recognizing the file, and then it turns into an executable and it becomes worthless. I've been losing alot of files this way. I've had to go back into Winzip.com, and download and install it again. I don't know man, my machine is going crazy.
Anyways, if I ever get it to work, I don't understand what I do with the file after I have copied it. Where and what entries do I add in?

got it. The reg file is not a text file. the file name should be saved as cp.reg without a dot after the letters reg.
right click on it and select Merge. Reads to me like you may have a virus. Have you scanned your system thoroughly?

If the .reg file doesn't work, this may be anther possibility:
Control Panel Does Not Open (Q221153)
SYMPTOMS
When you try to open Control Panel, your computer may stop responding (hang) or your screen may refresh, and Control Panel does not open. You also cannot open Control Panel if you boot your computer in Safe Mode.
CAUSE
This behavior is caused by a damaged .cpl file. These files populate Control Panel with tools.
RESOLUTION
Windows 95 and Windows 98
The .cpl files for Windows 95 and Windows 98 are located in the %SystemRoot\System folder.
Create a new folder on your desktop called "temp" (without quotation marks). To do this, right click and empty area on your desktop, point to New , click Folder , and then type temp .
Move all of the .cpl files out of the System32 folder and into the Temp folder that you created.
Verify that Control Panel opens. Note that Control Panel does not contain icons after you move all of the .cpl files out of the System32 folder.
Move the .cpl files back into the System32 folder, one at a time, and then open Control Panel after you move each file to verify that Control Panel opens.
If you move a .cpl file back into the System32 folder, and Control Panel does not open, delete the file, or replace the file with a known, good .cpl file.
Additional Information
In Windows 98, all of the base Control Panel .cpl files are on your Windows 98 CD-ROM and are located in the compressed Win98_28.cab file.
In Windows 95, all of the base Control Panel .cpl files are on your Windows 95 CD-ROM and are located in the compressed Win95_11.cab file. However, the Inetcpl.cpl file is in the compressed Win95_09.cab file, and the Jetadmin.cpl file is in the compressed Win95_16.cab file.

Yea,
I just ended up just having to go with my last resort by reformatting my drive and reinstalling windows. Tried everything to avoid that though. I just gotta be really more aware of viruses. Heh, didn't think it could happen to me.
Thanx for your help. :)
