View Full Version : HELP - No "Search" in WinXP Explorer.exe

Have installed XP Pro on two boxes (mine and my daughter's, each have their own license). On her box, Windows Explorer shows a "search" button, as well as can select "search" from a menu drop down. My pc works fine. However, clicking or selecting "search" does nothing... no search activity occurs. I have reinstalled XP Pro on her machine (as an "upgrade" installation rather than "new"), but this did not correct the problem. Anyone have any ideas? Is there a registry entry I can edit to re-enable "Search"? Her original installation was to a clean, reformatted hard drive (NTFS).
TIA

I browse Newsgroups regularly..
Found this, may be relevant..

It's a known problem, a fix is available but you have to contact MS, the fix
will be included in Service Pack 1.

Thanks, Smitty,
I looked thru the leads you provided, and although my problem is somewhat different (the search feature does not work at all, no reaction whatsoever when I press the "search" button) I did get a lead on a great freeware search program called "Agent Ransack" (available at agentransack.com). I did look thru that one long newsgroup thread, and will spend some time carefully going through that one user's "registry fix" to see what reg values may be different on my daughter's pc. Thanks again.

If you have TweakUI (not the one for WinXP) installed navigate to the Desktop folder and place a check mark next to "Search Results"

Barbara-Ann,
Thanks for the idea... I managed to get the problem fixed thru a reg patch posted by someone in a thread of similar no search" problems within XP. BTW, what do you mean by the "non" XP version of Tweakui?
Regards,
John
