this one is really stumping me. everytime i open a window on my computer, it displays the side bar for 'folders'. i have unchecked it under view>explorer bar>folders. i have checked all my preferences, reset the defaults, clicked the X to close it, ummm oh yeah and tried looking through the registry to see what the default is -- but i can't find in the registry. any solutions.
(hmm - it is amazing how asking a question in a forum can make a person realize how much i don't know jack............about computers -- i still hold true to my theroy that there is a little "nefarious' runing around in there messing with my preferences - just cuz he likes to see me get fustrated --- ohhh sorry - i am rambling --) hehe

_spygirlx,
We were all that way once. Practice makes perfect.
Maybe not in the registry, but you can go to View>Folder Options, click the File Types tab, scroll to Folder, click the Edit buttion, select open and click the Set Default button.

Exactly. I remember when I first found this site, I didn't know that much at all about the registry. I read through every post I could find. After about a week or so, I realized that Windows is pretty logical (even If the Unix fiends think different).
Stick around Spygirl. Im sure you'll be posting tips that we'll learn from as well.

I like to read the post here too! You learn alot just by reading... Most people turn there noses up when I post on other forums cause they don't want to follow any rules.... Oh well it is their puter... This forum is cool and open minded.... I have installed the best of the best ad blockers by reading and asking here.....
The people here have answered my stupid questions with open arms....
The registry is not as bad after you understand how it is a well organisized tangled mesh
I have put together a web page of the best for other people to read
http://www.geocities.com/putertuneup/CTP1.html
NFL has rules
NASCAR has rules
FOOTBALL has rules
COMPUTERS have rules
Thanks

i do have to say --- everyone here has been really great at answering my questions. and with answers that are legitimate, too. i have checked a few other forums and was really dissapointed. but here people are great. and i have already learned more about the registry in the past week just from reading posts from here. i am even to the point that i hate messing with each of the 'user friendly' options to set some preferences and prefer to use the registry to make changes. i find that they are more consitent there and do not cause as many conflicts in the software.
by the way. i visited the site. it is very informative. and i agree with using too many tweaking programs. they create too many conflicts.
what popup stopper and ad remove program do you use? i am just curious. i have a few other questions but i will post them as regular posts.
thanks

Excellent line, I prefer the same and I'm sure the other regulars do also.
Regarding Popup stoppers, I use a freeware program called Surf In Peace. Ads have gotten so bad, I run it at startup. It's the best I've tested and is highly configurable. It's settings are help in a text file named KillWatchList.txt. I could email it to you if you like. Here's a link:

I use POW by analogX.com
The only conflict that I have had is there is one line of code that I wished it would skip over.. Any programmer will be able to see the code in their head..
It is the one that pops up and says only one instance of this application allowed... When I run a tray icon saver after you restart the desktop explorer it pops up...
it is not an error but my users freak..
Other than that POW is very easy to use you open it up and click it on the ad title it adds it to the list and POW it is gone...
I emailed them hopefuly they will take it out in the next version.....
I am glad to see you like it here...
Thanks

For those who like to edit the registry manualy, I suggest keeping a little log in .txt format to keep track of all the tweekin' you do in there. Writing the key and values you change, puting time and date next to each tweak and adding comments is a good exemple of a simple log. So if things get screwy and cant remember what you did exactly, you'll love yourself (and me) for keeping a detailed log.
But it does'nt replace a good registry backup!
About those popup killers, I've stoped using any eversince I installed the PROXOMITRON. It a kind of proxy web content filter. REALY cool tool! But a bit of knowledge of what goes behind a web page is a must.
(I think I've already talked about this app to you Coolsights2000. You should mention the proxomitron in your usefull puter tuneup page.)
Get the proxomitron now or I'll find out where you live...

reghkr - thanks once again - i like this program it works great.
redhades - subtlty -- such a rare treat now a days. i love it. hehe. i look forward to a knock on my door (only if you are bearing christmas gifts) :~D
i am in the process of checking out that program now. i am not real familar with proxies or how they work the way they do. i will have to do some checking on it before i use a proxy filter program, but that is okay, it was on my to-do list anyway.
but it is a very good idea about the log. i did write down all of the things that i've done so far, just i could use it in future after a clean format. i think that now i will go back and make a more detailed log now that you mention it.
and - yes - i can attest to a back up file for the registry. i found out the hard way.
thanks guys - some really great information.

LOL
Keeping a log is great Idea I keep a few ... One for overall and one for each profile.... and you are right it make life easy.... I don't have to go Dah!
I'll check out proxomitron
My only question is does it work on a muliti user platform... most of the tweak programs that I have tried do not work properly on multiuser platform...
I had one that I loaded and did my normal reboot after installing a progrm and it put some crap in the registry to start up on boot up and it change my network logon stuff... That one went to bit bucket.... did not even mesh with it.... not a good program to pass on to others.....
and some of them don't keep track of the stuff per user.dat file.....
It it passes all of my tests then it will be put on a web page even if you do know where I live....
Thanks

It looks like a good program but!!!!!!!!
I can't spell worth a carp so what good does a dictionary do me!!!!
You need to know how to spell before you can find the word.....
Same goes with programs you need to know what the *.* is first
I was looking for programs that the illiterate user can use
To much configuring needed you need the plug an play programs today ......
I read the FAQ page
It has how to fix conflicts with Hotmail
but most people refuse to read the install readme.txt first.... Do you think they are going to the FAQ,,
Thanks

Like I said:
"But a bit of knowledge of what goes behind a web page is a must."
Ok, so the tool may not be for newbs. If you never heard what HTML, scrips or meta tags are, I dont suggest you go to deep in the proxomitron's configurations.
(I dont even know what meta tags are. Whenever that webdesigner dude at work talks about those, I try to act like I know what he's talking about)
And the part in the FAQ about the filtering commands is just SOOOOOO complicated. I didn't make it through all of it yet.
But just the default filters are usefull and easy to use.
