When ever I open a dialog box to open/save/load a file/program, the list of files being displayed is sorted by file size.
For example:
When I click Start on the task bar and
then select Run and then select
Browse the list of files I get is sorted by
file size. I have to use the "Arange Icons by"
option to sort the files alphabetically.
Any idea one how to get Windows to sort them
alphabetically by default when opening a dialog box?
I am using Windows 98 SE.

try this if I can explain it right
start -- settings -- folder options
click on the view tab
click on restore default
click on apply
then at the top click on reset all folders
click apply
the next one is for security issues
uncheck the box
hide files extensions for know file types
right above that pick the option show all files types
click apply
I had you do the last two so you can see what mail extennsions are in your email
you don't want to open certian types of mail attachments
ok now if that doen't work then we will have to get some one to tell use why it is not saving what you change...
Thanks
Mac!!!
This Is just my opinion
So if it stinks wait for another one

Here's a way to make all the Dialogs hopefully cooperate. Go to start>run>Windows Explorer
Open it. Right click on an empty spot in the right pane and arrange Icons by ... Whatever you like. While Holding the CTRL button down, close Explorer using the X in the title bar.

In regard to dialog boxes, this might be the one. This applies to many programs, not just the ones listed below.
Actually, it's Mosaic's with a little more detail.
Items in "Open" and "Save As" Dialog Boxes Sorted Incorrectly
------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows 98
------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS
When you use the Open command or the Save As command in one of the following tools in Windows 98, the items in the Open or Save As dialog box may be sorted incorrectly:
Notepad
Paint
WordPad
For example, files may be listed before folders, items may be sorted in descending order, and so on.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the sort order in Windows Explorer is changed from the default order.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, reset the default sort order:
Right-click Start, click Explore, and then click drive C.
On the View menu, click Details.
Click the Name column to sort items by name, press and hold down the CTRL key, and then quit Windows Explorer by clicking Close in the upper-right corner of the screen.
Release the CTRL key.
Restart your computer.
NOTE: You must perform these steps exactly as they are listed. For example, do not quit Windows Explorer by clicking Exit on the File menu.

Strange, didn't I post a message saying
that Mosaic1's answer helped me out?
It seems I still have to get used to the way these forums work.
