Ok, heres the scenario: I have Win 98 and an Ethernet adapter attached and lately whenever I restart my comouter it detect new hardware and I hate that. That isn't the problem. I connect using a dial up modem. I can dial in to my service fine adn it connect but when I open IE 6.0 it immediately goes to the cannot display page thing. I right click and go to properties and this comes up: res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.html#.... I reinstalled communications, dial up networking, dial up adapter and TCP/IP and no dice. I even loaded the drivers for the ethernet card from my CABS folder and still nothing worked. I am getting upset please help me out.

If the ethernet card is not used and that's what it keeps detecting, why not remove it.

Also, make sure your connection settings are input properly in Internet Explorer. Right-click on the IE icon on the desktop, choose properties, click the Connections tab and verify all info is correct here. Make sure username and password is setup also.

One more thing you could try if you haven't ripped the card already.. Right click on network neighborhood (my network places, etc), properties, go to the properties for your tcp/ip -> dial-up adapter. Click OK on the warning message, then click on the advanced tab, check set this protocol to be ..default prot.. click ok, ok, then reboot, If this doesnt work, try typing in an IP address and see if you get the web page, it's probably not a DNS problem at all! I agree with reg. the ethernet card is probably the culprit. Check IRQ conflicts as well.
