File Sizes

I scanned two documents and save then as .bmp files. One was 417KB , the other 1,046KB. I then inserted these two pictures into a WORD document. Its size is reported as 220KB. Can someone exlain what to me is an anomaly?

Word might have changed the pic. size..enlarge the picture and see how big it is. Not much help, just a random thought.
