I got Win98 SE. There is no problem with shuting down but if I or the program instalation go on restart it stops, hangin on the Win logo. It seems to switch everything down properly before, because the scandisc doesn't run after pressing restart buton and it does work after the sys. crashes. I am suspissious about conflict with Sound Blaster Drivers since first time I noticed the problem was after installing these. I re-installed the windowes completley since though, with re-partitioning the drive and it started to do it again right during the Win installation. I tryed to look for the references but have found only "shut down problem" solutions. Can you help, please?

you can start here until somebbody has a better idea

Click here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q188867)

did you download the updates for windows and you might check for driver updates for your sound card

if you reload windows you have no updates it clears them out more than likely you need new win drivers for the sound card

Thanks
Mac!!!

This Is just my opinion
So if it stinks wait for another one
Cause I'm no expert

Thanks for advice. I have been trying the microsofts support for several times with no sucses, it's a bit time consuming and complicated "surf'n'read" though. Regarding updates it is my usual habit to check all possible updates once a month, at least, and after the new instalation (got even CNET Catch Up installed) so I'm afraid that it's not an issue. I am also a bit computar literate and I try to solve this for about half of year and it just drives me crackers.

Here'a great site: <a target="_blank" href=http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm>Windows Shutdown Troubleshooter</a>

Good luck,

I had a similar problem. It was related to the SB16 legancy emulation driver. The IRQ would conflict with a NIC card I had on boot up. There is a doc at the SB web site showing how to correct the problem. I forget the doc # but it should be easy to find.

Thanks to all. I tried all previous as updating, Microsoft and Windows Shut Down Troubleshooting Web pages (even they were very useful to developing my knolegwe anyway) with no efect at all. Did clean Boot Ups with completly no drivers loading and still it does the same. The last thing with SB16 emulation is brand new to me and I am going to check that out. It is defintly a briliant new hint after trying all that previous stuff. What is more confusing though is that I just finished complet repartitioning and reinstalling of my PC and it started to do this thing already when restarting during the fresh Win instalation. It starts to be way above my head. Hope the last hint will help.
