View Full Version : Dial up starts when printing

The dial up connection starts when I print to a print server using TCP. Setting connections to never dial a connection in IE5.5 prevents this. This only happens the first time I print after boot up. Hitting cancel on the dial up screen causes the print to function properly. Using WIN98SE, IE5.5 with a Linksys 3 port print server.
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

Setting the connections to never dial does stop the dun from starting. Zone alarm says that spool32.exe is trying to access the internet when I try to print. Is this normal and do you know why? I do not understand why printing to a print server would start the dun. Setting connections to never dial works but when I do go on the internet I have to start the dial up and than IE. Is there a way to set the connection to always dial on IE start up and not when I am printing?

Is the spooler maybe looking for a print server somewhere on the Internet? If it was WinXP, I'd say so.

Spool32 is using tcp/ip to go to the print server, most likely on an NT box, this is why your zone alarm goes off. Its probably sending the request thru UDP (user datagram packets). Which use different ports, thus activating your firewall. If setting IE to never dial a connection still gets reset, try deleting the connection, deleting dial up networking (make sure you have a win98 cd before doing this), then reinstall Dial up networking and make the connection again. If the connnection is not necessary i would just un-install DUN. Good luck
