I'm trying to help my mother install the service pack 2 for I.E. 5.0. She's in a remote location, so course, that makes it more difficult.

She has the correct file > IE5Setup. It is a total of 564 kbs. She already has service pack 1 installed. I had her locate the file and instructed her on executing it. In the middle of it, it wants to locate a site!

She should be able to install this small add-on offline....Then she gets online, and it says it'll take an hour and a half!! Why would she need to get online at all?? Plus, I had her choose Tools > about I.E. after she opened her browser, and nothing comes up at all! Is it possible she needs to use the repair tool first?

Can anyone tell me why this is? I also, should add that I use AOL, so am set up differently. I have my Internet Options > connection settings configured to Never dial a connection, after highlighting AOL. Shouldn't she be able to do the same, regardless of her ISP?

Thanks for any input on this.

What has been downloaded is simply an install routine that goes to one of Microsoft's site to both download and install the Service Pack/update. Once it has been done, there usually is a folder named Windows Update Files that you can keep or not. If you keep it the long download won't be needed next time you want to install it.

As to Never dial, sure she can do it in Tools, Internet Options. Just means she will have to double-click her connection icon to first get the modem dialing up.

Thank you,

We located an identical file in Windows Update folder. Then changed the settings to 'never dial' a connection. Tried to execute again, and it says she already has a program running that version.

But when we try to install the latest patch (Nov. 11) for her version, it says it's the wrong version. It's for version 5.0 Serv. Pack 2! Something's not right here....but ;o\

There are 2 Service Pack 2s for Internet Explorer, one for 5.01 and the other for 5.5. Be sure which version of I.E. you have by going to Help, About Internet Explorer. You need to look at 2 lines, the first with the Version number and the fourth with the Update Versions data.

This is quick..I had found out before I downloaded this for her that she has version 5.0. I got the right Sevice Pack and the latest patch for Service 2. I made sure of that, since I have 5.5 myself.

The only thing I can think of is that we already installed it.....I know, don't laugh. The reason I say that is that a few weeks ago my sister was there, so I had her accept the file etc.

Well, we all seem to be getting senile, so who knows; but I doubt it, or we would have also installed that patch.....;o\

Yeh, I was trying to have her check the version again, but like I said in my first message. When she clicked Help about I.E. on the toolbar.....nothing came up! So..we'll have to work on it again. It doesn't help that all this is Greek to her and doesn't even know what she's doing, when she's doing it...lol
