Well I somehow screwed something up and I am hoping one of you knowledgable people can help me correct the problem. In a nut shell :

I needed software that could edit the .wmv a/v format, so I downloaded several trial versions of various editors to find one that suited my needs. Most were just a simple .exe and required no install. A couple did need to be installed and added right click features and stuff. None did what I needed and I removed them all, but the problems stayed.

When I open IE it works, but links that open to a new window get stuck. If I don't click the stop, and refresh buttons on the new page, it won't ever load. Secondly, when I try to close IE, it stops responding. If I try to kill it in the task manager, I get a blue screen of death. Basically I have to reboot every time I close IE. Obviously something is screwed, and beyond my scope of repair. A reinstall of the operating system would be an absolute last resort.

I am using Win 98 SE with all updates, and IE 6. Not sure what other info I need to provide, but any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am probably going to get some nasty emails but I will say it anyway. I use utility programs so when I create problems which most of us do by loading software or hardware that is not compatible with our OS we create the problem. I use Norton Utilities to fix my system, and for most part is works very well. Not the 100% fix but really helps for those that are software junkies like me. Have you gone to your system tools and clicked on IE repair which comes with win98? Go to start, programs accessories, system info, system tools and it should be there. That may or may not work. Another easy way is to download as a reinstall the whole IE 6.0 again over the top. If nither works than you will have to write down the errors on the blue screen of death exactly as they are stated so further assistance can be given. Good luck

You can download IE6 again, but try this first. Go to add/remove programs, select IE6 and Internet tools and click the add/remove button. When the option box opens, click to repair IE. If that doesn't work, repeat the last procedure, but then select the Restore previous Windows configuration. Then try it.
Incidentally, when you download IE 6, when you get the option of type of install (minimal or full etc) click on the advanced tab, then select to download to be installed later. That way, it will download the whole prog to your HD for you to save to disk for any later installations.

Post back with your results.
