PC Tools AntiVirus' OnGuard feature contains the File Guard tool, which protects your system from becoming infected with a virus or item of related malware by continuously monitoring files whenever they are accessed. This includes situations when files are copied, moved, extracted, opened or run on your system.
When OnGuard detects that a file being accessed is infected or suspicious, the file is either quarantined or removed, depending on the selected Action to be performed on a detected item option on the Settings -> OnGuard Settings screen.
To activate OnGuard protection, do either of the following:
On the Main Status screen, click the Activate OnGuard Protection button. This button changes to Deactivate OnGuard Protection, indicating that the OnGuard feature is active.
On the OnGuard screen, select the Activate OnGuard check box, which provides access to the File Guard tool.
To deactivate OnGuard protection, do either of the following:
On the Main Status screen, click the Deactivate OnGuard Protection button. This button changes to Activate OnGuard Protection, indicating that the OnGuard feature is inactive.
On the OnGuard screen, clear the Activate OnGuard check box, which disables the File Guard tool.
Whenever OnGuard is deactivated, the OnGuard Protection Alert tool displays. Under the Select duration section of this window, select the time interval when OnGuard should be automatically reactivated. Time intervals can be set from 5 minutes through to 1 day. To prevent the OnGuard Protection Alert tool from automatically reactivating OnGuard, select Permanently under Select duration.
To access File Guard's features, ensure OnGuard is activated and click File Guard to display the File Guard screen.
The following information is displayed on the File Guard screen:
Infections removed in this session - indicates the number of infections removed by OnGuard's File Guard tool in the current session. A session is defined as the time from when PC Tools AntiVirus is launched and running to when it is closed.
Suspicious item action - indicates the action taken when a suspicious file is accessed on the computer. This is set to Quarantine, Remove or Prompt Me, depending on the Suspicious item option selected under the Action to be performed on a detected item section of the Settings -> OnGuard Settings screen.
Infected item action - indicates the action taken when an infected file is accessed on the computer. This is set to Quarantine, Remove or Prompt Me, depending on the Infected item option selected under the Action to be performed on a detected item section of the Settings -> OnGuard Settings screen.
The following functions are available on the File Guard screen:
Scan Exclusions - click this function if you wish to prevent specific files, folders or file types from being detected by OnGuard's File Guard tool.
Click here for additional settings - click this function to display the Settings -> OnGuard Settings screen.
Click here to View Results List - click this function to display the Infected items List.
When OnGuard is active, infected or suspicious files detected on the system are automatically quarantined or removed, according to the settings displayed on the File Guard screen. All items detected by OnGuard and the actions performed on them are recorded in the Infected items list. OnGuard detections are shown as popup alerts above the SysTray when the OnGuard tools can display popup alert window option is selected on the Settings -> General Settings screen. Note: OnGuard does not disinfect files.
If you have selected Prompt Me for either a Suspicious item or Infected item under the Action to be performed on a detected item option on the Settings -> OnGuard Settings screen, you are prompted to perform an action when a suspicious or infected file is detected by OnGuard. When the prompt displays, you can select:
Quarantine - This places the suspicious or infected file into quarantine, where it can be recovered at a later time through the Quarantined Items List.
Remove - This deletes the suspicious or infected file from the computer. Note: Deleted files cannot be recovered.
Selecting the Don't prompt me again during this session check box before clicking either Quarantine or Remove performs the selected action on any subsequent detections for the remainder of the current scan.
Note: If you do not click either Quarantine or Remove on a given prompt within 20 seconds, the detected file is automatically quarantined.
When PC Tools AntiVirus has finished scanning your system, the Scan results screen displays.
